Winchester Monopoly puts city landmarks on the board

Monopoly is receiving a Winchester makeover, with a new city version of the iconic game.

Winning Moves UK, the company behind Monopoly, wants local suggestions for game pieces and squares.

“The game will see around 30 leading Winchester landmarks replacing the famous Monopoly addresses like Mayfair and Park Lane,” said Ben Thomas, from Winning Moves UK. “We are inviting the public to help us put this edition together.”

Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Jane Rutter said:  “This is great news that Winchester is to get its very own version of Monopoly. I will of course be voting for the Mayor’s residence, Abbey House, and our Guildhall to feature on the board. I know everyone will have fun suggesting their own favourites.”

The Mayor is keen to keep the board exclusively Winchester-based but players may be sent outside the city too. Ben continues: “Players may be sent to Southampton, rather than the jail, as a nod to the rivalry between the two cities.”

The Winchester theme doesn’t stop at the board. Winning Moves UK are determined to make the game as life-like as possible.

“Some of the Chance and Community Chest cards will be Winchester-themed too,” said Ben. “We could send players back three spaces for getting stuck in a city traffic bottleneck.”

Winning Moves is also thinking of making Jane Austen marked Monopoly money. Although the game is currently in development it’s expected to be ready in time for Christmas.
